MERGE GALLERY is pleased to announce the opening of an exhibition of new works by Tokyo-born New York painter JURI MORIOKA.

The exhibition, titled COMPOSITIONS IN FOUR DIMENSIONS, will consist of a series of oil paintings on both canvas and wood panel.

Morioka's dazzling abstract paintings in oil, embellished with gold leaf, impart a sometimes dizzying sensation of looking up, down and in all directions at once. The works are composed of striped and dotted lines that undulate rhythmically in grid-like patterns, weaving an energetic yet carefully balanced complex of vivid color into loosely rectangular forms and spaces. Converging edges within some of these suggest perspective. Others, apparently solid, lie parallel to the canvas at varying depths beyond the surface. In some, free-floating spirals, ideograms and mysterious objects are encountered. The overall result is a study in rhythm, color, space and time that insists on being heard and felt as much as seen.

About her work, Morioka writes: "I always approach the canvas directly, without any preceding sketches or studies. I paint in the manner of Zen, moving my brushes along with my mind's rhythm, relying solely on instinct and intuition. Outside of conscious thought, I search for harmony and form in the play of color and shapes, and a composition gradually emerges. Then, feeling my way with my brush, I enter the painting and wander through its spaces and along its paths with a deep sense of belonging. I welcome the viewer to join me on the same journey, with the same sense of belonging, sharing in the belief that everything has a life of its own."
